I wear leather cleats when I play soccer. I find they are more flexible when they have been worn for sometime. They tend to last longer for me too as opposed to plastic. I prefer mini shin guards.

I know many people love their non-leather cleats, but I have found that they often fold / crease at the toe line rather then softly bending like leather.
This can often "pinch" the players foot. My son bought a pair of $130 synthetic cleats and wore them one time. They were pinching his feet to the point of serious pain.

I know that their are different types of cleets for different positions, but how can you tell what cleets are uses for what positions.

The difference in cleats really is not for positions. It is for playing conditions. They make FG (Firm Ground) HG (Hard Ground) and others.
What you will generally see is that the softer the ground, the fewer the number of spikes (cleats) the bottom of the boot - cleat - shoe will have.
If you wear a cleat with a lot of spikes on a wet day, the cleats will get filled with mud and turf, making them non-effective.  Some wet - soft ground cleats only only have 8 spikes.  If these are worn on firm ground however, they can really hurt your feet as your weight is not distributed evenly across many spikes.
Thanks

I am a defender and the field is never wet.  What stud sizes and what kind of studs should I have... These are what I wear

You wear a cleat that is comfortable. That is the number one rule for most players.
The problem is that every make and model of cleat feels and fits differently.
Finding the one that just "feels great" is by far the biggest challenge. Try wearing one that hurts and find out what it does...
Personally I think the Nike Zoom Air / Legend models are the most comfortable boots ever made. When they don't "feel" like a cleat and feel like a sneaker....
you know you have the right pair.

I prefer full sized shin gaurds. They give you more protection. 50/50 balls are times for injuries to happen. Going into a hard tackle with a big set of shins is very conforting.:P

Leather is my prefered choice.Currently I have a pair of Umbro's.Best quality I have ever seen.Mini shin guards are for me,full size just seem irritating for me.I'm much more comfortable with mini's.For some reason I run faster.Maybe I'm speaking too soon because I never had a bad injury out of a tackle.I pray I never will.A friend of mine didn't walk straight for three weeks because of foot sweep.

I find the leather cleats allow you to feel the ball better. I am a fan of the Copa Mundials. They make you feel like your running on clouds( they are soooo light weighted. The leather is super soft and molds to your feet nicely. Plastic shoes, I have found do crease. This makes it hard to strike the ball with accuracy.

I love the kangaroo leather.  It molds to your foot like a glove.  I currently use the Diadora Maracana boot.  It is made of kangaroo leather, fits very comfortably and provides great traction.  It is an excellent boot for the price.

As for shinguards, I need full size ones.  I am unlucky when it comes to being kicked in the shin, so I need all of the protection I can get.  I have been using shinguards that are secured with an upper and lower strap.  I am contemplating going to strapless full size shinguards with sleeves.  I wonder if they would be more comfortable and lighter.
