I was just curious if anyone else was having issues with Rec Dept leagues.
It seems that so many are "stuck" in the past and won't move towards improving their programs.

I would have to agree that so many seem stuck in the past with old traditions and rules, that the leagues (and thus teams) are just not showing improvement. It's a shame, you would think they would want to work harder to further improve.

Complacency is often the issue with Rec Depts. This is not true for ALL but it is the trend we see.
They have a program that does not involve parents or coaches input. It is more of a "job" than it is a passion. Follow the guidelines and rules that have existed for years and years and things run "smoothly". Try and implement change, and things get much harder. While it is often hard to hold meetings to have criticism thrown your way, it is a valuable learning tool.
Rec programs are vital to our sport as they introduce many players to the game that otherwise would not try it. However, they need to better learn from the changes that are happening in youth soccer around the world.
One main example?
Smaller fields and fewer players.
6v6 or 7v7 should be played in rec soccer.
Having 11v11 games for 10 year olds is just silly.

I am a head coach for 2 teams U6&U9, a Field Director,Board Member and League Director, as well as a parent of 2 boys who play soccer for a rec league. I have played soccer myself for 14 years at the rec and acad. level as well as high school soccer. I stepped away from soccer for 9 years after injuries left me unable to play and finally one of my son's showed intrest and wanted to play! I missed soccer and I am now once again I am in the arena of the soccer life. Really is there any other way to live. The association I belong to is a "new way association".I have to say that some changes in the way soccer is being played now, have it's benifits but I am not happy with the way some people want to dilute the game. Yes, smaller fields and less players per team do give more touches on the ball. But to have one or two kids running with the ball all game while the rest run helplessly after them, only helps the ones who actually get to touch the ball. This is a all to common problem that I see week after week. Yet I get the "don't play with formations or defence and offence speech" from clinics and association new age folks. We play 3v3,4v4,8v8 and 11v11, which personally I think is fine... but when people want to change the rules and dilute the basic structure of soccer,ie: kick ins instead of throw ins,no basic formations. I even heard the other day of an asscociation not counting a goal unless all the 3v3 team's players were past the half line. I do believe in progress but not at the expence of the purity of the game. I see a lack of progress between say U7 & U8 when the rules take a leap forward leaving all the players having to learn new rules instead of developing their skills. It's like starting all over but these kids have been playing for 6 seasons. Kids are not stupid and even at U5 can grasp the basic ideas of formation, passing, sharing, throwing ect. There are things at the rec level I want to change so I joined the association. There are many people ready to complain but very few who take steps to try and fix things. Sorry so long but it's a touchy subject with me.
